Teeth Darkening and Staining
It’s not abnormal for teeth to become dingy, we use them everyday. But, that dingy look can make us look older, worn down, or even unclean. In general, teeth staining is categorized as either intrinsic or extrinsic. Teeth whitening can remove extrinsic stains, meaning stains that are on the outer surface of the tooth, this is due to the porous nature of enamel. Extrinsic stains are often the result of consuming pigment-heavy foods, including dark beverages such as tea, coffee, and wine. It may also include a number of dark sauces such as soy sauce or tomato based sauces. Smoking cigarettes or the use of other tobacco products are also a big contributor to extrinsic stains.
During your initial appointment, Dr. Shannon Snipe will be able to determine if your stains qualify for a professional whitening treatment. Stains that can not be whitened can be covered through dental bonding or the addition of dental veneers or crowns.
Teeth Whitening In Office
Having your teeth whitened in our office takes about one hour to complete. We will first discuss the look you’re hoping to achieve and answer any questions such as post sensitivity and future staining. Once the patient is ready, we will then proceed, the whitening process includes:
Teeth Whitening At Home
Besides office teeth whitening, we can prescribe a kit for whitening at home. This may be done instead of having your teeth whitened in our office, or following office whitening for future touch ups. Your kit will include a customized tray and a prescribed gel, this concentration will not be as strong as we can apply in the office, but higher than can be purchased in a store.
